Not all DPF cleaning is equal. A bottle of additive poured into the fuel tank is very different from a full off-car clean. Here’s exactly how we restore a blocked diesel particulate filter at our Mascot workshop.
Step 1: Diagnosis and removal
First we confirm the DPF is the problem — checking fault codes, pressure readings and the symptoms you’ve described. Once confirmed, we remove the filter from the vehicle. Cleaning it off the car is what allows a proper, thorough result rather than a surface flush.
Step 2: Initial flow test
Before any cleaning, we run a flow test to measure how restricted the filter is. This gives us a baseline number so we — and you — can see the improvement afterwards. It also confirms the filter isn’t physically cracked or melted (in which case it would need replacing, not cleaning).
Step 3: Deep cleaning
Using purpose-built equipment, we clean the filter from both directions to dislodge and flush out the trapped soot and ash. Ash is the key difference from DIY methods — it can’t be burned off by driving or additives and must be physically removed. The ceramic substrate is cleaned without damage to the honeycomb structure.
Step 4: Drying and second flow test
The filter is dried, then flow-tested again. We compare the before-and-after readings so you have proof the clean has worked, not just a promise.
Step 5: Refitting
Finally we refit the clean filter, clear any related fault codes and check the vehicle runs correctly. In most cases the whole process is completed the same day — usually within 3 to 4 hours.
